chapter 36

The four teens ran to the crashed ship to see if anyone was hurt and zephyr noticed something as they got closer. ‘Huh, that’s odd’ he said as he and his friends ran.

‘What is?’ Deker asked.

‘I’ve seen those kinds of boats before, their made for only one passenger and mostly for abandoning ships that have been attacked or majorly damaged’

‘So what, like a life boat?’ Selina said.

‘Yeah exactly which bothers me, there’s a space port not far from here, so why is it landing here?’

‘it looks damaged when it came down, maybe it’s an emergency landing” Jim commented.

‘That’s what worries me, what could have damaged it to make it land here?’ zephyr asked concerned and both Deker and Selina looked at each and knew what the other was thinking, what could have?

The four stopped next to the life boat and Jim started knocking on its window, ‘hey mister? You’re okay in there right?’

A clawed hand pressed on the window suddenly and caused everyone to step back and Selina to hold Deker’s arm in fright. The window opened and out came an alien wearing a tricone hat and a dark clock wrapped around him, he was coughing badly as he crouched up and grabbed Jim by the front of his shirt.

‘Easy there’ zephyr said when he saw the creature grab Jim.

‘He’s a comin’ said the creature which they could tell from his voice was male and old ‘can you hear him? Those gears and gyros clickin’ and whirin’ like the devil himself!’ the man said stretching his neck at each word before letting Jim go and hobbling toward something.

‘Hit your head there pretty hard, didn’t ya?’ Jim asked worried.

‘I hope it’s only that’ Deker said a bit nervous of the seemingly crazy alien.

Selina watched the alien pick up a small chest, no longer frightened but worried for him. ‘He might be hurt’ Selina whispered.

‘He’s after me chest . . .’ the creature said as he turned towards them while hefting the locked chest onto his shoulder ‘that fiendish cyborg and his band of cutthroats. But they’ll have to pry it from old billy bones’ cold, dead fingers before I . . .” it was then billy bones clutches his hand to his chest and collapsed to the ground in a coughing fit.

‘Oh my . . . he’s really is hurt!’ Selina said as she rushed over to him to see if she could help.

Jim and Deker kneeled next to billy, ‘come on, give me your arm’ Jim said as he lift of billy’s clawed arm up and over his shoulder as Deker did the same.

‘Come on old man’ Deker encouraged and looked back to zephyr ‘Zeph get the chest, seems valuable to him’

Zephyr nodded and picked up the chest with both hands, ‘need some help?’ Selina asked and zephyr shook his head.

‘nah it’s not as heavy as it seems . . .’ he replied before looking back to billy bones ‘which means he’s in bad shape if he’s having trouble carrying this’

‘Good lad’s’ billy said in short breath.

‘I’ll see if I can heal him back at the inn’ said Selina as she felt rain drops starting to full ‘let’s get him inside first and out of this rain’

Jim sighed ‘mom’s gonna love this’

Zephyr chuckled’ just say your bringing another pet home’.

Tessa had woken up to the sound of rain starting to pour down and looked out the window, letting out a yawn. ‘Huh, could’ve sworn I heard something a minute ago?’ she said to herself before shrugging ‘must’ve been my imagination’.

She got out of bed and light digital blocks and data code enveloped her before disappearing, she looked in the mirror to see her Anne read disguise form. ‘Now to see what everyone else is up to’ she said, unlocking the door as the symbols around it finally faded. She walked out and looked down at the ground floor; she could hear Delbert and Sarah talking as Delbert approached the door. ‘Wonder what their talking about?’ she asked herself.

To say the rest of the evening was eventful would have been putting it lightly, for the surprise Tessa, Delbert and Sarah got when Delbert opened the door to leave was only the beginning. Though to see Jim and Deker carrying and elderly hurt alien, zephyr carrying what looked like a treasure chest and Selina following close behind and all of them soaked was quite the way to start it off.

Sarah gasped in shock ‘James Pleiades Hawkins!’

‘What the hell?!’ Anne added.

‘Mom he’s hurt . . . bad!’ Jim replied as he and Deker set the man down.

‘He crawled out of a damaged lifeboat . . .’ Deker continued.

‘Which crashed into the dock out of the sky . . .’ Selina added.

‘And he was trying to carry this away’ zephyr finished as he set the chest down to the ground.

Yeah, definitely one way to start the evening.

Selina pushed up her sleeve to reveal Mogu’s arm band and tapped the gem on it, ‘we need your help Mogu!’ she said as white mist rose out of the gem and their Moogle friend appeared from it, surprising everyone who hadn’t met him.

‘Is that . . . a Moogle?’ Anne thought ‘wait! She has her own Moogle?!’

‘what’s up sel . . .’ Mogu was about to finish asking before he saw billy bones on the floor and then latched himself to Selina’s arm ‘w-w-what is that?!’ he asked frightened.

Selina patted his head to calm him down ‘he’s hurt and I need some medicine for him, can you get me a potion?’ Mogu nodded when he realised Selina was trying to help the alien and reached into his bag and pulled out a healing potion and handed it to her and she smiled gratefully ‘thanks’.

She held the opened bottle to billy but he pushed it gently aside with his hand and this made Selina worry, ‘me chest, lad’ billy said as he gestured for his box. Jim moved the box to him and billy began tapping on the button of the chest, dialling in the combination for the lock and the box opened. ‘he’ll be coming soon’ billy said as he reached into the chest and pulled out what looked like a round object wrapped in cloth and string ‘can’t let them find this’.

‘Who’s coming?’ Jim asked concerned and again billy grabbed Jim’s shirt but this time put his head next to his.

‘The cyborg!’ billy answers in a low tone that Jim, and the keyblade wielders barely heard ‘beware the cyborg!’

Billy bones then laid back to the floor, using his last breath to pass on his warning. Sarah, Selina and Tessa had their hands to their mouths in shock, Mogu sadly replaced the cork back on the potion and Jim, zephyr, Deker and Delbert looked at the now dead body of billy sadly. It was then they saw bright light cast through the hologram blinds of the window and heard what sounded like an engine whirring down outside.

Jim and zephyr made their way to the window and Jim rolled up the blind just enough for the two to get a peek outside and what they saw did not make things better. Beyond the window they saw figures jump out of a solar boat and start to approaching the inn and by the way they were carrying their weapons, they weren’t friendly guests.

Zephyr noticed a large figure that seemed to be the leader pointing towards something and he saw he was pointing towards his boat. ‘Oh no, don’t do it!’ zephyr said but could nothing as he saw the rest of the figures hacking and shooting at the boat, effectively destroying it. ‘Damn it!’ he yelled and the figures outside must have heard him cause they turned their attention back to the inn and the lead figure pointed his arm at the inn.

‘That doesn’t look good’ zephyr said out loud as he and Jim stepped away from the window.

‘Quick! We gotta go!’ Jim called out to everyone and at that moment, odd pirate looking figures started to appear out of darkness in thin air. Figures that zephyr, Deker and Selina were familiar with.

‘Time to go!’ zephyr ordered as he pointed for upstairs.

Delbert went to open the door before narrowingly avoiding a laser shot blasting the door handle off, ‘I believe I’m with Jim and zephyr on this one!’ he said as he ran after Jim and Sarah.

Zephyr looked at Deker and Selina to see them summon their weapons and start attacking the heartless, he saw Anne watching surprised and grabbed her hand. ‘Come on we gotta go! He told her as he pulled her towards to stairs.

‘But what about Deker and Selina?!’ Anne asked, she knew they could handle themselves and they were supposed to be her enemies but for some reason unknown to her she couldn’t help but worry.

‘They’ll be fine, they’ve fought these guys before’ he replied continuing to run, he looked back for a brief glimpse and muttered to himself ‘at least I hope so’.

Deker and Selina stood back to back with keyblades in hand as they saw heartless approach them, ‘think we can take them?’ Selina asked as she launched an aero spell at one of the heartless, knocking it into the wall.

‘these guys, yeah . . .’ he said as he cut another heartless down and looked at the door to see shadows approaching from behind the blinds and towards the door ‘but I don’t like our chances if we have to face whoever’s out there, so let’s not be here’

Selina nodded and the two ran up the stairs after their friends, with laser bolts being fired from outside and causing a fire to start. They caught up with their friends to see Delbert calling out to something outside the window; they turned their heads to the stairs when they heard voices calling.

‘Where is it? Find it!’ the voices called and they saw the shadow of a figure pointing towards the stairs they had climbed up and more shadows starting to ascend those very stairs.

‘We’ve got to get out of here!’ Deker said before looking around to see someone missing, ‘where’s zephyr?!’ he asked.

“Oh no you don’t!” they heard zephyr’s voice call out before hearing a shot go off.

Moments earlier . . .

“You go on ahead, I’ll catch up” zephyr told Anne as he stopped at his bedroom door.

“What?! We can’t stop, we gotta get out of here!” Anne replied in concern.

“Just got to grab something, go!’ he gestured for the window Jim had lead his mother and Delbert to, Anne was hesitating to leave but nodded and went on a head.

Zephyr entered his room and immediately removed the loose floor boards that hid his small wooden chest, opening it and removing the watch and pistol from within. He looked back at the doorway to see Deker and Selina run past, not having seen him, “if their running then it’s definitely time to go” he said to himself before pocketing the watch and readying his pistol “one shot, better make this count”.

He looked out his door and saw to his left Deker and Selina talking to Anne and his eyes grew wide when he saw a flying pirate dressed heartless appear behind Deker, ready to attack with its sword. “oh no you don’t!” zephyr called out before aiming his pistol at the heartless and firing a shot at it, his friends turned back just in time to see the heartless fall and fade away.

“Nice shot” Deker said as he smiled thankfully.

Zephyr shrugged “I think that may have been a lucky shot, couldn’t afford to miss” zephyr replied “now let’s get out of here!”

“three!” they heard Jim yell out and saw him push Mrs. Hawkins, Delbert and himself out the window, Anne and Selina ran to the window to see if everyone was alright and were glad to see they had landed on Delbert’s carriage.

“Zephyr! Anne! Jump to the carriage!” yelled Deker and both did just that, they jumped out the window and landed on top the carriages now covered roof.

“Wait! What about Deker and Selina!” called zephyr as he looked up was surprised by what he saw next, two armoured figures wearing what looked like armor had jumped out the window with the very blades his friends wielded. He became even more surprised when he saw the weapons change form in a flash of light, a bike and a broom and the two armoured figured began riding them alongside the carriage.

“We’ve got to get somewhere safe, can you lead the zephyr?” called one of the armoured figures in a voice zephyr knew.

“Selina?!” he asked surprised and then looked at the other figure “if that’s you, then is that you Deker?”

“Yeah it’s me” replied Deker beneath the armor as he briefly looked back at the inn.

“But how . . .?”

“I promise we’ll explain later zephyr, but right now we got to get out of here. The pirates didn’t see us but we can’t stay here, please zephyr just trust us”

Zephyr managed to look back and see that the inn was now ablaze, destroyed by the pirate’s raid. Zephyr looked back at the armoured Deker and nodded; he then looked at Anne and saw the shocked expression on her face as she saw the inn burn and brought her closer to him.

“Is that Deker and Selina, zephyr? Are you and everyone else alright?” called Delbert.

“Yeah doc we’re okay” zephyr replied and brought his head over the edge of the carriage roof and looked down on Delbert and the Hawkins family “but we should get somewhere safe for the time being, doesn’t look like those pirates spotted us”

“We’ll go straight to my home then” said Delbert.

“sounds like a plan”
